That sounds unusual to me, but it depends on the kind of command under study. If it's a junior reserve command or the boy in question had military school training, it would make more sense. When you have time, I would be interested if you could identify officers in Alabama regiments who were are twelve or thereabouts in 1860. I'd like to check on them myself.
