The First Battalion Virginia Reserves was formed after the Confederate Conscription Act of February 1864. This act extended the age requirement of compulsory service to all males born between 1814 and 1847 or from 17 to 50 years of age, unless exempted. I had two relatives in this unit, father aged 47 and son aged 17.
