If the Civil War Database was using my history of the 48th Va, part of the Virginia Regimental Histories Series, as its source for saying John F. was confined aboard the Coatzacoalcos on 9 June 1862, then the database is flat wrong. My history shows that John F was reported aboard the ship at some point after his capture at Cross Keys on 8 June. As others have pointed out, John F's service record from the National Archives shows he was confined on the ship, but does not give any date for that confinement. Given the sequence of events I provided in my earlier post regarding CS POWs, it's not likely John F. was confined on the Coatzcoalcos before July 1862.
