Re: Secretary of War, James Seddon

Yes, I spoke with Mr. Clemmer and he told me about his book and that my ancestor's name was in his book on the Roll of Honor. The Archives in Washington sent me a copy of the letter written By Gen. H. D. Clayton telling about the soldiers in the 39th Alabama Infantry that displayed "Extraordinary skill and Valor in the Battle of Murfreesboro" and he tells about several of the soldiers and what they did in the battle. When the soldiers voted on the one they thought did an outstanding job, they voted on Sgt. C.K. Hall and Sgt. W.J. White and the vote was a tie
with each other in their gallant and courgeous bearing, never hestitating, nor wavering from the beginning to the end of the conflict. The Company was unable to decide between these two soldiers, so they were both nominated for the Roll of Honor.
Both of the soldiers were promoted from Sgt. to 2nd. Lt. Both were in company H, 39th Al. Infantry. This letter written by Gen. Clayton was forwared to Gen. Bragg and on General S. Cooper, Adj. & Inspector Gen, in Richmond, Va. and on to the Secretary of War.
Next, Gen. Clayton wrote a letter to Capt. M. Falkner, calling special attention of the commanding General commending these men for promotions. He said they were tried and true and had been in the service since the War began and will fill the places which he recommended, better than he fears. will be done if left to an election,

Thanks for you help.
