There are at least thirty-five Confederate soldiers (4 artillerymen, 7 cavalrymen and 24 infantrymen) from Virginia buried at Laurel Grove North Cemetery in Savannah, GA. I came across their names in the small booklet List of Confederate Soldiers Interred in Soldiers’ Lots, Laurel Grove Cemetery, Savannah, Georgia (printed in 1874) while doing research on Georgians killed at Gettysburg and I have also seen and photographed many of their grave markers at the cemetery. I had been wondering why these Virginians were buried in Savannah, so after recently doing a little research, I discovered that some of these men have documents in their compiled service records indicating they had been prisoners of war at Point Lookout, MD and were among 3023 Confederate prisoners paroled in November of 1864 and received for exchange at Venus Point near Savannah on 15 Nov 1864. The death dates on their markers indicate they all died or were killed between 16 Nov 1864 and 12 Jan 1865 (11/64 – 28, 12/64 – 6, 1/65 – 1). These brave men from Virginia may have died from diseases contracted while being prisoners of war or possibly while helping to defend Savannah from William T. Sherman’s troops during his infamous March to the Sea. One thing I have not done is to verify the correctness of the information for them listed in the booklet mentioned above, which I have found not to be 100% accurate regarding name spellings, ranks and regiments for other men buried in this cemetery.
