Re: Confederates from Virginia Buried in Savannah,

Ed, I hope that you can help me with this. My gg-grandfather's brother, George A. Walker joined the 8th Brigade, 3rd Regiment, Ga State Guards in February, 1862 in Towns County, Ga. According to the muster roll for this unit, George A. Walker died at Camp Jackson in March, 1862. From what I understand, Camp Jackson was located "in the suburbs of Savannah". Is there a George A. Walker buried in Laurel Grove Cemetery? Do you know anything about this State Guard unit? Do you know what they did with the men who died at camp? My gg-grandfather, Ansel B. Walker joined Jones, Company F, Ledford's Regiment in June of 1863 and was mustered out with unit two years later. Benjamin Ledford of the 6th Ga. Calvary organized the unit from veterans of other units and the mountains of North Ga and North Carolina. My Ansel B. Walker's grave marker in Gordon County, Ga. lists him being in Company A, 24th Ga. Calvary. That is a different Ansel B. Walker, apparently from South Georgia. Do you happen to know what process the War Department went through to put a marker on a Confederate Soldiers grave in 1917?
