Paul,

Thanks for the posting. My wife's gg-grandfather, John B. Lanford, was a sergeant then 2nd Lieutenant in the 43rd Alabama Infantry, Co. C. We are proud of his service and he is even named in the OR's and recommended for a "battlefield promotion" due to his performance at Chickamauga. The 43rd Alabama was a part of Gracie's brigade and charged the Union position on Horseshoe Ridge (Snodgrass Hill). They suffered heavy losses. This unit also had a proud fighting record at Drewry's Bluff and during the Petersburg siege.

I have never been able to find a grave for Thomas H. P. Lanford or James Ivey Lanford. James Ivey is incorrectly listed as "James J." Lanford.

We know where the other family members are buried in Alabama. Unfortunately, neither Tom or James are buried there. They may be "unknowns" somewhere in the Richmond-Petersburg area or maybe they are in an area grave under a "hard to read", misspelled or missing marker.

The gentlemen in the 44th Alabama are 2nd cousins to my wife's gg-grandfather and gg-granduncles listed above.

Jim Martin
