SHANKS, AUSTIN: Sgt., Co. B. Born Floyd County 12/42. Living there, age 8, 1850. Enl., Pvt., age 18, 5/25/61, Floyd C.H., Floyd County. Present in unit 10/31/61 and 12/31/61. Promoted 4th Cpl. 2/1/62 and 3rd Cpl. 2/11/62. Present in unit 2/28/62. Promoted 5th Sgt. 4/21/62. Present in unit 7/17-21/62. Wd., 8/29-30/62 Manassas. Hospitalized, wound, Charlottesville 9/6 to 7/62 when sent to Lynchburg. Hospitalized, wound, Danville 9/9/62 to 10/2/62 when released to duty in unit. Present in unit 10/31/62 and 12/31/62. Signed unit clothing roll for 1-3/63. Named on unit clothing roll for 3-6/63. Wd. 7/2/63 Gettysburg, Pa. Signed unit clothing roll for 10-12/63 and for 1/64. Named on unit clothing rolls 3/21/64 and 3/29/64. Captured 5/12/64 near Spotsylvania C.H. Point Lookout, Md., 5/18/64 to 7/30/64 when sent to Elmira, N.Y. Never arrived there. Escaped en route. Promoted 3rd Sgt. by 10/19/64 when wd. Cedar Creek. Absent from unit through 10/31/64. Wd., "severely...through shoulder," 3/25/65, Fort Stedman and hospitalized Petersburg same day. Hospitalized, wound, Richmond 4/2/65. No further record. A 7/84 postwar company roster noted that he escaped the Petersburg hospital when U.S. troops entered Petersburg [in 1865] and "was never discharged nor surrendered;" and that he had been promoted to Orderly Sgt. [1st Sgt.] during the war. Postwar Philadelphia, Pa., driving a milk wagon, 1880; carpenter, 1900-1920.
