The Virginia in the Civil War Message Board

Re: Austin Shank - Va 42nd Infantry

The 42nd Virginia was in the right center of Jones' brigade and thus during their night attack on 2 July would have been opposite the Union "Iron Brigade" which extended westward from near the summit of Culp's Hill, starting on the right with the large 7th Indiana regiment which had not been engaged on 1 July. The next regiment on their left was the 6th Wisconsin which coincidentally was featured prominently in the History Channel's Gettysburg, to include their building earthworks on Culp's Hill. The 6th Wisconsin and the remaining depleted units of the Iron Brigade likely contributed an oblique fire upon the right wing of Jones' brigade as it attempted to climb the steep north slope of Culp's Hill. If you get to Gettysburg, locate the 7th Indiana monument (in front of the tower on Culp's Hill) and walk a few yards north where remnants of the breastworks can still be seen. If you follow the line of the works to the west, you will find small markers to the 6th Wisconsin, 2nd Wisconsin, Co. F of the 2nd Wisconsin, and the 7th Wisconsin. The 19th Indiana and 24th Michigan extended the line to the west but their positions are not marked. Based on unit size alone, odds favor Sgt. Shank having been shot by a soldier in the 7th Indiana. But it could have been another Iron Brigade soldier or possibly even a member of the very small 56th Pennsylvania in Cutler's brigade posted on the right of the 7th Indiana at the angle where the Union works bent back toward the southeast.
