The 42nd Virginia was part of J.M. Jones' Brigade, Edward Johnson's Division, 2nd Corps, at Gettysburg. The 42nd joined with the other regiments of Jones' Brigade in the assault on Culps Hill on the evening of 2 July. After being repulsed, the Brigade remained in the vicinity of Culps Hill until the night of 3 July when it withdrew. It was not seriously engaged in the 3 July attack on Culps Hill.
