Re: 62nd Alabama Co. I - Lt. John Stone

John Bestor Stone enlisted as a Private and, I believe, attained the rank of Corporal with the 4th before being promoted to 2nd Lieutenant at the time of his election to the 62nd. As for the Stones in Co. F of the 4th, that's a rather long story. There is another John B. Stone in Co. F from Dalton Georgia who enlisted at Huntsville and was discharged in Dec. 1861 for an eye infection. I believe he is unrelated. On the Tarleton site, John Bestor is listed in company F, but should be in Co. A. I promised Dr. Jones that I would send a copy of the CSRs, but haven't yet done so. There is a Henry Stone in Co. A that I believe is John Bestor Stone's brother. As for the Stones in the 62nd, I don't see any connection. I have further examined his records, and I show that he was elected Lietenant in the 62nd on April 11th 1864, however his transfer is not requested until August of 1864 (the election date is also confirmed in this document). As for the dates - I have seen some mistakes on the records, yet both units' records seem to correspond with each other, as do the hospital rolls. I believe, too, that the 4th may have been willing to let John go. He had been beat up quite a bit while serving with the 4th - wounded 5 times, some wounds listed as severe (he must have had quite an immune system!!!).
