Re: 62nd Alabama Co. I - Lt. John Stone

All this is pure speculation, and I would have to look much more closely at the recruitment/organization structure of this company to really make an educated guess, but I suspect that his "conscript duty" was enlisting conscripts in the Selma area. This *may* have been for the purpose of rebuilding the ranks of the 4th Ala., but the conscript laws intervened and the men were assigned to the 62nd. As the enlisting officer, it was probably assumed that he would remain with the company. Early in the war, the organizing or enlisting officer of a company *usually* was elected as Captain. Later in the war, I have see many examples of them elected/appointed as 1st or 2nd Lt., or not being with the regiment that the company was assigned to at all. Or, maybe he had even filed the papers for a transfer at that time, but it was not initially granted...then granted when he was wounded once again. I don't think that there is an error in dates, from what it said to be in the CSR.
