Re: CS Cavalry in northeast Alabama in October '64

Hi Bob,
I've read a little about this. I think that Wheeler had just returned to the army in Alabama from his August/September raid into Tennessee. I don't know if Hannon was with Wheeler in his raid. During that raid, I think that Gen. Jackson's division was the only cavalry with Hood's army. Wheeler reassumed command of the army's cavalry to perform rear guard duty, while Hood was at Gadsden and Sherman at Gaylesville. When Hood marched north, he took Jackson, leaving Wheeler to stay in front of Sherman, even when he turned about and marched east. There were several battles between Wheeler's cavalry and Sherman's infantry in that area during the month Sherman waited while Hood moved to and camped at Tuscumbia/Florence.
