Henry,

Thanks for that additional information. I thought that you would be interested in my sources, so here is a breakdown regarding the ironclads in question. Note that I only have whether the info comes from the O.R.'s in general. I didn't record in my notes whether it came from the Army O.R.'s or the Naval O.R.'s. I do remember that I drew info from both.

“Nashville” sidewheel ironclad ram. 1400 tons. [Construction started at Selma by Porter and Watson. Completed at the Mobile Yard in 1864. Burned in May, 1865 to prevent capture.]

Construtction started: O.R.; Completion and disposition: "From Old Navy to New, 1776 to 1897; Picture History of the U.S. Navy", by Theodore Roscoe and Fred Freeman, 1956.

"Phoenix" floating ironclad battery. [Construction completed at Mobile Yard in 1864. Burned to prevent capture in Jan. 1865.]

Completion and disposition: "From Old Navy to New, 1776 to 1897; Picture History of the U.S. Navy", by Theodore Roscoe and Fred Freeman, 1956.

Two unidentified ironclads [gunboats] built on the Tombigbee by “Messrs. Porter and Watson”, under contract, which were light-draft, double-propeller steamers mounting four guns each. As of Nov. 1, 1864, the two vessels were still awaiting armor [which was to be four inches thick]. 180 feet keel, 38 feet beam, carrying eight guns each according to another report.
Large unidentified ironclad sloop. [In the process of building on the Tombigbee as of Nov. 1, 1864, with engine furnished, but lacking armor. Also built by Porter and Watson.]

All info from the O.R.'s.

Two large unidentified ironclads built at Montgomery. No further information.

Info from the O.R.'s.

Also from the O.R.'s: The Mary, Virgin, Heroine, Red Gauntlet were not surrendered by the Navy. It is noted in the O.R.'s in a Union report that the Confederate Navy stated that it had no authority to surrender these Confederate Army purchased ships.

There is no question, from info in the O.R.'s, that the "Nashville" was said to have been started at Selma by Porter and Watson. I have seen nothing to indicate that it was moved to Montgomery, but that is possible. Overland seems improbable though. Of course, there is always the possibility that the names were confused or the the ships were misidentified in the correspondence.
