Bergeron's "Confederate Mobile" mentions that the "Phoenix" was sunk in the ship channel to close a gap that existed in the obstructions. That being done, General Maury remarked that Farragut might attempt to approach Mobile by water with the same odds of success as sailing his fleet through the Green Mountains.

The URL below provides information that this floating battery was sunk in August 1864 and later burned.
