Instead of being in a battle or skirmish, James Brownlee may have been wounded during the constant sniper firing and artillery bombardments which charaterized the Petersburg lines in late 1864-65. When wounded, he may have been removed to a hospital in Petersburg or Richmond, then when he died, he may have been buried in Oakwood or Hollywood Cemeteries in Richmond (or in Old Blandford Cemetery in Petersburg). They would be starting points to look.
