A search of the message board archives will show that we have discussed a proposed organization called the "Pope Walker Legion". There were more than enough companies in camp at Huntsville to form the 19th Alabama Infantry, and seven companies formed an additional battalion under Nicholas Davis, Jr. This was styled the "Independent" Battalion, the 1st Alabama Infantry Battalion, and the 5th Alabama Infantry Battalion. The War Department designation was recorded as the 2nd Alabama Infantry Battalion. Davis resigned due to ill health on Jan. 19, 1862, and Major Chaddick, formerly chaplain of the 4th Alabama Infantry, assumed command.

The battalion organized with five companies on Oct. 29, 1861, and the 19th Alabama was ordered off to Mobile about that time. Any confusion about which companies belonged to Wheeler's Regiment must have been resolved before the 19th Alabama broke camp. Two additional companies joined the battalion within a few weeks, and three Alabama companies from the 38th Tennessee Regiment were assigned on April 2, 1862, to bring this command up to regimental strength.

The "Calhoun Beauregards" organized at Middleton, Alabama, July 25, 1861. This company was accepted in Confederate service on August 10, 1861, members enlisting for three years or the war at Huntsville, Alabama, September 23, 1861.

Companies assigned to the 19th Alabama reported to camp at Blue Springs, said to be five miles north of Huntsville. Davis' Battalion organized at Camp Jordan, also near Huntsville, but I cannot say where exactly. Perhaps Blue Springs and Camp Jordan were one and the same.
