Company "A" of O'Neal's 26th Alabama was the "Dixie Boys" of Fayette County, formerly Company "B", 3rd Alabama Infantry Battalion (Smith's). Capt. James H. Moore was captain of this company, which was accepted in Confederate service on Sept. 15, 1861. Companies assigned to the 3rd Alabama Battalion (later O'Neal's 26th Alabama) were in camp at Tuscumbia AL for several months.

The "Calhoun Guards" was Company "A" of the 2nd Alabama Infantry Battalion, later 26th/50th Alabama, Capt. James A. T. Sappington.
