Not a problem. I'm unaware of any connections between these two companies. The "Calhoun Guards" of Calhoun County organized at Jacksonville, Alabama, September 15, 1860, and enrolled in state service at Talladega, Alabama, February 23, 1861. Transferring to Confederate command at Fort Morgan, Alabama, on May 7, 1861, it became Company "A" of the 2nd Alabama Infantry Regiment. The company disbanded twelve months later at Fort Pillow, Tennessee.

The "Calhoun Beauregards" organized at Middleton, Alabama, July 25, 1861. This company was accepted in Confederate service on August 10, 1861. Members enlisted for three years or the war at Huntsville, Alabama, September 23, 1861. They remained part of the 2nd Alabama Infantry Battalion until it became the 26th/50th Alabama Infantry by virtue of three companies from the 38th Tennessee Infantry being added to it. This took place at Corinth MS on April 2, 1862.

The only elements they have in common were their county of origin, the year of enlistment and the incidental facts that the name "Calhoun" appears in both company names and they were assigned to Alabama commands which were numbered "2nd". However, one was a regiment and the other a battalion. They have different captains, places of enlistment, terms of enlistment and company names. One disbanded after its term of enlistment; one continued in service. They simply are different companies.

On a related subject, Bob Bradley at the ADAH mentioned that he's working on a project that compares companies that joined the A.V.C. vs. those they elected not to join. I had not realized that there were some militia companies that considered becoming part of the A.V.C. and determined that it was not in their best interests.
