Re: Kierce Brothers in 42nd Alabama Infantry

Any idea where I might find a copy of this book. Also, if you have a copy of this book, would you be willing to send me a copy of the page(s) you are referring to? In George Kierce's book he wrote called "The Strange History of a Backwoods Country Boy" he did indicate that he held a position in the clerk's office in Covington County and that in 1860 he was elected Circuit Clerk. I am not sure what this position entails, but it is possible that is when he was Postmaster. Also, do you think it is possible that he could have re-entered the war with his father, after being released in 1863 for health reasons?

Here is an excerpt from his book.

"We were married and I settled me a home in Andalusia, but the Civil War came on and I volunteered and my office and my home became of little value to me. Although I went out as a private, I had an easy time, and came out of the Siege of Vicksburg as second lieutenant of my company, which was 42nd Alabama. Our command reassembled at Demopolis after the thirty days' furlough was out. Here I was discharged on account of physical disability. On coming back to Andalusia I served churches, taught school, and narrowly escaped going to Ship Island with many of the citizens of Andalusia, when the Yankee raiders came through. I was County Colonel."

One other explanation could be that there is another George W. Kierce that served but that would be very unlikely since his father and brother also served in that same Regiment.

Thanks for the info!
