Re: 13th Alabama Cav. Battalion/56th Alabama Caval

The 13th Partisan Ranger Battalion reference is correct. Company "E" of that command became Company "I" of the 56th Alabama in June 1863. Here's what I have on that company:

Company “E” of Fayette County

Capt. James H. Moore. Formerly Captain of Company “A”, 26th Alabama Infantry Regiment. Later served as Captain of Company “I”, 56th Alabama Partisan Ranger Regiment.

Officers and men mustered at Smithfield, Mississippi, on April 7, 1863, later becoming Company “I”, 56th Alabama Partisan Ranger Regiment.

It's not likely that anyone other than a veteran member of that command would have known this. That is, unless a veteran shared his story with another man who happened to have a great memory, like the character Richard Gere played in "Sommersby". [Click on the link below if you enjoyed the movie.] I'll let you decide about that.

There was a command known as Lewis' Battalion, and there were plans to increase it to a regiment. However, the regiment was to have been commanded by Bryan Thomas. We sometimes see references to Thomas' Alabama Cavalry, but it never got beyond the original five companies. Major Lewis was killed at LaFayette Ga on June 24, 1864, and the battalion was led by Major William V. Harrell.
