Re: Confederate Monument at your Courthouse?

The memorial in the courthouse square at Clayton reads:

1861 -1865

IN PROUD AND LOVING MEMORY
OF THE CONFEDERATE
PRIVATE SOLDIER

HE BORE THE BRUNT OF THE GREAT WAR
HIS PRIVATIONS AND SUFFERINGS
WERE SURPASSED ONLY BY
HIS MANHOOD AND COURAGE
HE WAS OF OUR HOME AND BLOOD
AND WE LOVE HIS NAME
AND MEMORY WITH A FEELING
THAT IS BEYOND THE REACH OF PRICE
OR THE POWER OF MISFORTUNE

COMRADES

TO OUR CONFEDERATE DEAD

The Confederate memorial for Jefferson County stands at the head of 20th Street and 8th Ave. N. near the courthouse in Birmingham Ala. It is a stone obelisk flanked by statues of representing soldiers of the Spanish-American War and World War I. The marker includes the words of Jefferson Davis, "The manner of their death was the crowning glory of their lives."

The marker has been attacked and doused with paint on several recent occasions.
