Figures seem reasonably accurate, but the source would have to be the microfilm. I'm sure there are totals somewhere for each county; I didn't see totals for the county I examined (Lawrence) and used the totals for each page to come up with the figures for died in battle & died in disease. Anyone using the microfilm would have to remember that three forms were used on this census, only one including losses during the war.

Other notes: during this time, the term "mortally wounded" was used interchangably with the term "killed". The compiler obviously intended to use two columns, one for died in battle and the other for died of disease. As an example of how the term "killed" was used, Col. Egbert Jones of the 4th Alabama was listed as "killed" at First Manassas, even though he did not actually pass on to his reward for several weeks after the battle.

Generally accepted figures for Alabama men enlisted during the war run between 100 and 120 thousand. The number should include Alabama soldiers as qualified in my post about Alabama officers last week. It should exclude militia and home guards who never reported in camp or were issued arms during the war.

Based on correspondence between Dr. Owen at the ADAH and actual Confederate veterans, most soldiers bore a great deal of animosity towards home guards and militia. The latter enjoyed home cooking, warm beds, a roof over their heads, the companionship of wives and sweethearts, and the ability to farm, fish or hunt as they pleased. Most importantly, their lives were never in any danger. For those reasons, soldiers were highly offended when the services of home guards/militia were elevated tp the same level as their own.

Personally, I'd prefer to honor their wishes.
