The other thing to consider are the casualties and, more importantly, the soldiers who were captured during the Appomattox Campaign- especially the ones captured at the Battle of Sayler's Creek. I believe about 6,000 Confederates surrendered during that battle, and they were NOT included in the Appomattox parole figures. The 9th Alabama had nine men captured (including my gr-gr-grandfather) who were then marched off to City Point, VA and then put on ships for Point Lookout prison in Maryland. They were not part of the 76 members of the 9th who were paroled at Appomattox.
