You have to remember that large numbers of men were sick or otherwise unfit for duty in the winter of '64-65, and that there was a tremendous amount of straggling and desertion in the Appomattox campaign. Whole units simply disbanded and went home.

In my look at the 12th Alabama about 60 men surrendered at Appomattox, but the total strength of the regiment was over 120. The rest were sick or wounded but still on the rolls. Unlike today, a wounded man was not dropped from the rolls automatically if he didn't return for an extended time.
