Totals for the 11th Alabama Infantry Regiment through Dec. 31, 1864, tell us the following:

The regiment had on its rolls a total of 1,175 officers and men. Of these 439 were taken off roll due to death. 199 were killed in battle, 62 died of wounds, 177 died of disease, and one from another (unspecified) cause. The loss by death constitutes about 3/8 or .375 of the total enrolled.

Of the remainder, 199 were removed from the rolls due to retirement, resignation or discharge. Of these, 54 were lost due to wounds, 113 due to physical disability, and 32 due to other causes, such as substitute, court martial or an order of the Secretary of War. Another 98 officers and men were taken off roll due to transfer (71) or desertion (27). These losses amount to 297, or 25% of the total.

After these deductions, 465 officers and men remained on roll. Of the remainder, 62 were absent as prisoners of war. Another 63 were absent due to wounds, and 22 were absent without leave. Another 81 officers and men were assigned to other duty at stations apart from the regiment. The total absent totaled 228, which left 237 present on roll. The total absent was just under 20% of the total enrolled, and the total present was about the same proportion.

If the number of deaths held constant for the net 20 Alabama regiments assigned to the Army of Northern Virginia, Alabama dead in this theater would number almost 9,000. Also, of the 297 officers and men who left the regiment for causes other than death, it might be assumed that 40% (or 119) reenlisted in another unit. We know that 71 transferred, so that means we should expect that about 48 of the those who were discharged for reasons other than transfer eventually reenlisted. The number might be higher; this is just my guess.

The consolidated muster rolls are interesting. The word "Alabama" or "Alabamians" appears on it several times. This language leads me to believe that Confederate troops from other states may not have received such a form.
