We discussed this unit at some length some months ago. The company was named for a Florida commissioner, most officers and men that I could identify being from west Florida. They mustered at Montgomery AL on Sept. 13, 1861, and were assigned to the 5th Confederate Infantry as Company "C". The War Department also designated this regiment as the 40th Tennessee. At any rate, most of the regiment was surrendered at Island Ten on the Mississippi River on April 8, 1862, and went to Federal prison for several months. They were released for exchange at Vicksburg MS and reorganized as 2nd Company "E", 42nd Tennessee.
