In Response To: James D. Harp, 4th Al. Cavalry ()

This man enlisted under Capt. John F. Doan in Tishimingo County, Mississippi, February 1, 1863. The company was assigned to duty as 2nd "D" of Roddey's 4th Alabama Cavalry Regiment. A year later officers and men transferred to Company “B” of Williams’s Alabama Cavalry Battalion, which later became Company “B”, Burtwell’s 11th Alabama Cavalry Regiment. Harp's records are filed with the 11th Alabama Cavalry.

Records of this regiment show that he was captured near Decatur AL (or Moulton) on Mar. 18, 1864. At this time most of Roddey's command was serving with the Army of Tennessee near Dalton GA, and it's not clear to me what was happening in the Tennessee Valley. Harp was sent to Camp Douglas in Chicago Il where he died of chronic diarrhea on Jan. 6/7, 1864. He was buried in grave 422 block 2, Chicago City Cemetery.

An additional note probably made soon after his capture mentions that Union authorities at Chattanooga considered exchanging this man for "George McMurray & son, Home Guards McLemore's Cove". Evidently arrangements were never agreed upon, and Harp was sent off to die in Chicago. Incidentally, "To Die in Chicago" is the title of a new book about Camp Douglas.
