Re: James D. Harp, 4th Al. Cavalry

Not having your knowledge of Mississippi units, I'm unable to offer anything useful about Lt. Akers prior service. If your source on the 11th Alabama is Willis Brewer, it's somewhat inaccurate. Brewer's usually reliable until we consider Roddey's commands, and he's sometimes off base there due to (1) lack of information, and (2) existing information being contradictory, confusing or just wrong. I find no evidence that Akers ever served as a captain, at least not in this command.

Most of the companies in the 11th Alabama had been assigned to Warren's or Williams's' Battalions after Forrest's Regiment was broken up in 1864. Some sources claim that companies continued to operate as they did under the old battalion associations and never in concert as a full regiment. In any case, here are a few notes on companies and their captains:

Company “A” of Lawrence and Franklin Counties, Capt. William H. Warren.
Formerly Company “C” of Jeffrey Forrest’s Cavalry Regiment.
Company “B” of Tishimingo County, Mississippi, Capt. John F. Doan.
Formerly 2nd Company “D” of Roddey’s 4th Alabama Cavalry Regiment..
Company “C” of Franklin and Lauderdale Counties, Capt. John Barr.
Formerly Company “F” of Jeffrey Forrest’s Cavalry Regiment.
Company “D” of Morgan County, Capt. Z. F. Freeman.
Formerly Company “H” of Jeffrey Forrest’s Cavalry Regiment.
Company “E” of Limestone County, Capt. John R. McDonald.
Formerly on duty with the Conscript Bureau at Decatur, Alabama.
Company “F” of Franklin County, Capt. John Anthony Steele.
Formerly 1st Company “D” of Roddey’s 4th Alabama Cavalry Regiment; later Company “G” of Jeffrey Jeffrey Forrest’s Cavalry Regiment.
Company “G” of Lauderdale County, Capt. Thomas E. Barner.
Formerly Company “B” of Jeffrey Forrest’s Cavalry Regiment.
Company “H” Lawrence and Franklin Counties, Capt. Parker Nathaniel Green Rand. “Leighton Rangers”, formerly a local defense company led by Capt. George E. Kumpie.
Company “I” of Tishimingo County MS, Capt. C. J. Hyatt
“Tishimingo Rangers”, formerly Company “I” of Roddey’s 4th Alabama Cavalry Regiment.
Company “K” of Franklin County, Capt. Van B. Flake.
Formerly Capt. Samuel M. Moore’s Company “D”, Jeffrey Forrest’s Cavalry Regiment.
Company “L” of Lauderdale, Capt. William H. Shepherd.
A new company organized in late October of 1864.
