Not having your knowledge of Mississippi units, I'm unable to offer anything useful about Lt. Akers prior service. If your source on the 11th Alabama is Willis Brewer, it's somewhat inaccurate. Brewer's usually reliable until we consider Roddey's commands, and he's sometimes off base there due to (1) lack of information, and (2) existing information being contradictory, confusing or just wrong. I find no evidence that Akers ever served as a captain, at least not in this command.

Most of the companies in the 11th Alabama had been assigned to Warren's or Williams's' Battalions after Forrest's Regiment was broken up in 1864. Some sources claim that companies continued to operate as they did under the old battalion associations and never in concert as a full regiment.
