Re: Pioneer Corps

Iv'e tried to out sort his travels, see if this helps.

Robert Chaney, enlisted in Company F of the 28th Alabama Infantry on February 22, 1862 in Walker County, Alabama, to serve for 3 years or the duration of the war.

Sometime in June or before, he was temporairly assigned to extra duty with the Pioneer Corps. [Engineering Work]

He was captured September 22, 1862 at Woodland [sic], Ky. I would believe he may have been wounded during his regiments action during the siege of Munfordville and Woodsonville, Ky. during the period Sept. 14-17.

Not knowing he was captured, he was carried on the company muster rolls as being "Absent without leave"

Subsequently he was exchanged in November, 1862. His record does not record him until October 8, 1863 as been assigned to the 9th Alabama, then serving with the Army of Northern Virginia and recorded as present the end of October, 1863. His last record with the 9th shows being paid December 31 1863 in Richmond, Virginia.

At the end of February, 1864, at Dalton, Georgia, he is recorded present with Company F, 28th Alabama, as having been "regained from desertion" pay deducted while "absent without leave" There are no further muster reports for the company

He then appears having receipted for an issue of clothing, April 24, 1864, back with Company F, of the 28th Alabama.

There are no further records.

No. 7.--Report of Col. John W. Frazer, Twenty-eighth Alabama Infantry, of operations September 16.

MUNFORDVILLE, KY., September 18, 1862.

CAPTAIN: In obedience to circular just received I have the honor to report:

On reaching the range of the guns on the fortifications on the 16th instant this command was moved in line of battle to the left of the position previously occupied by the battery of Captain Waters and halted, supporting the battery. Before the battery opened fire the regiment was ordered to move by the right flank and take position on the side of the mountain on the right of the Munfordville road. Here it rested in line for an hour or more, when, in accordance with orders, we marched to the brow of the mountain to support our skirmishers. While here we received an occasional shell from the works and were fired on by the enemy's skirmishers. Two companies from our left were then detailed to drive in the enemy's skirmishers occupying a wood in front and on the opposite side of the valley from us. This detachment, commanded by Capt. John H. Turpin, Company B, moved quickly forward, and after exchanging a few shots drove in the enemy's [skirmishers], as it is reported, with some slight loss or damage to them. These woods were held by this detachment until the command was relieved from its position on the mountain by a portion of the command of Major-General Buckner. After being relieved, as above stated, I reported with my command at the foot of the mountain, and marched with the brigade to a point a half mile northeast of the works, when the brigade bivouacked for the night.

One private of Company L, wounded by a spent ball in the finger, constituted all the damage sustained by this command.

It gratifies the commanding officer to be able to say that the men and officers were calm, cool, and cheerful during the entire day and obeyed every command with great alacrity and promptness.

I have the honor, captain, to be, very respectfully,

JNO. W. FRAZER,
Commanding Twenty-eighth Alabama Regiment
.

No. 13.--Report of Col. A. Jr. Lythgoe, Nineteenth South Carolina Infantry, of operations September 16-17.

SEPTEMBER 18, 1862.

The Nineteenth Regiment South Carolina Volunteers left the camp near Cave City at 4 a.m. on the morning of the 16th instant, moved with the Fourth Brigade, to which it is attached, to a short' distance of the fort at Woodsonville, where the general commanding the brigade assigned it to a position on an eminence on the right of the road. In passing to it the regiment was for a short time exposed to the fire of grape and shell. One man, a private in Company I, had his haversack strap cut by a grape-shot. The regiment was placed in the position to which it was assigned, when one company was thrown out as skirmishers. This company soon became engaged with the pickets of the enemy at long range. Two companies of the Twenty-eighth Alabama Regiment were sent out by Colonel Frazer to join the company of this regiment. The three companies then drove the pickets of the enemy into their trenches, when the firing ceased and the regiment was ordered to more still farther to the right into a body of woods, where it remained until the morning of the 17th instant, when it was moved with the brigade to the camp in the vicinity of Munfordville.

Very respectfully,

A. J. LYTHGOE,
Colonel, Comdg. Nineteenth South Carolina Volunteers.

Capt. D. E. HUGER,
Assistant Adjutant-General.
