Cicero McNeal's original twelve-month enlistment began on July 17, 1861. Evidently he and other members of his company reenlisted on June 30, 1862.

Put yourself in the position of the sergean who recorded the bi-monthly roll. In October 1862 his regiment was stationed hundreds of miles away from Mississippi and had no means to know what had become of Cicero McNeal. The most recent information he had was that McNeal had been sent to a hospital back in June 1862. Hence the note on roll, which would have been repeated on subsequent rolls until McNeal's name was removed.

Each of the rolls state that McNeal was enrolled at Arkadelphia by Colonel Gantt. Based on his rank, this was Col. R. W. Gantt, 12th Arkansas Regiment. i don't believe that Colonel Gantt left his camp west of the Mississippi, traveled to Arkadelphia AL to recruit and enroll Cicero McNeal. The fact that that McNeal had lived near a town by the same name as the placed he enrolled in Arkansas is just a coincidence.

Speaking of which, the Confederate memorial at Arkadelphia AR was made by McNeal Marble Company of Marietta GA. It was damaged by a tornado in 1997 and is being repaired.
