On a family tree seen in this link http://www.bernethy-eby-scribner.com/getperson.php?personID=I616666659&tree=Eby It says that
When the Civil War broke out Oliver and his sons, signed up. According to the Washington County, Alabama 1907 Census of Confederate Soldiers, "Nathaniel John Smith was born January 12 1823 in Wayne County Mississippi. He entered service as a laborer under Captain White in 1861 in Ordnance Department at Mt. Vernon Arsenal and served to 1865." I cant find that census, in addition to oliver, robert, ira, ebenezer, joseph, george, and thomas would have all been of age. on Lisas cemetery site on this link http://www.southerncemeteries.org/1907census/washingtoncounty,1907.html it lists

Smith, Nathaniel John Under Captain White Mississippi

Smith, William Jasper Company E, 43rd Alabama Regiment Nanafalia, Alabama
