The captain's full name is James G White. Sounds as if the Smiths decided to remain in north Mobile County when the arsenal moved to Selma. We can be fairly certain they were not soldiers assigned to duty at the arsenal, and may have been employees only. In response to the question as to age eligibility, certain types of work provided exemption from Confederate service. For example, an employee in a government-managed or government-owned enterprise was exempt. The salt works in Clarke County is one example, the coal mines in Shelby County are another.
