Mount Vernon Arsenal, March 1, 1861, Sir, I have the honor to apply for a a position in the Army of the Confederate States of America. I passed three years at the U. S. Naval Academy at Annapolis, Maryland. At this Academy I was instructed, theoretically and practically in Light and Heavy Infantry tactics, according to the system laid down by Hardee and Scott and in the Light Artillery Tactics and Gunnery. I now hold the commission of 2nd Lieutenant of Artillery in the Army of Alabama and since the 23rd Ult. I have been at the school for the instruction of recruits at Mount Vernon Arsenal. I am now second in command of a detachment of recruits numbering 106. I think I could serve my country to a better advantage in the Infantry than in any other Corps. I am sir, your obdt. Servt. N. J. Smith.
