Re: Oliver Smith, Nathaniel John Smith Ordnance De

the first one seems to be the right man, but sure wish i could find substantial proof, all it say on the family trees is He entered service as a laborer under Captain White in 1861 in Ordnance Department at Mt. Vernon Arsenal and served to 1865." and He worked on building road from Fort Strates [?] to Arsenal for four months in
1861. Then worked as laborer for Captain White at Mt. Vernon Arsenal to 1865.
He filed for his pension in Washington County. thats it.

Nathaniel moved his family to Mt. Vernon and was stationed at Fort Sroddert for the war's duration. His brother Ebenezer was killed in battle according to my G-Aunt Kate and according to Frank (Bud) Cole Oliver and his sons helped build a brick wall at Fort Stoddert which still stands today. Nathaniel is given credit for building the flag pole. it mentions nothing of being a pow, but it does state he filed a Pension in Washington County AL, can u locate that George? He is Daniel Smith's 5th Great Grandfather he is applying for our new SCV camp in Greene County MS.
