George: Thanks for the info, at least now I know. The real sad part is that there is a photo in a book, Indiana at Vicksburg (written in 1911), I found on ebay, that has a nice picture of a gun, earthwork and trench. Behind you can see the buildings at Vicksburg. Having been there to visit and walk some of the battlefield ( once in 2006, once in 2008, and once this past June) I did not recognize the earthwork. I asked the nmp rangers, they said from the looks of the buildings, that this was Salient work on Hall's Ferry road. No one has been able to answer how that got bulldozed, after it was marked historically. Is there any chance the earthwork is hidden behind or under trees/weeds? Terry winschell also said it is not there, but I forgot to ask him how it got bulldozed.
My ancestors were at the seige, two ggguncles in the 2nd texas Infantry, in the lunette which also is gone. Thanks again for the info and pictures. Tom Wiseman
