The Alabama in the Civil War Message Board

George: The reason I asked is because recently Parker Hills, the historian, sent a message to another civil war blog stating that there were earthworks perhaps hidden in some sort of brush, and that he and Warren Grabau a number of years back, tried to convince the Mayor of Vicksburg to build a walking path so that people could see these earthworks, and he was referring to the Salient work on Halls Ferry road. I am going to follow up with him after a while. I don't want to be too much of a bother to him. Being so far away here in Illinois, except for occassional vacations, I can't really do a visual of the ground itself. I think there should be a red metal tablet for the Salient work itself, at least it is printed in the 1911 book I referred to earlier. The picture of you appears to read Cummings Brigade, instead of Salient Work on Hall's Ferry road. Maybe Terry Winschell would know, did he say anything either way about it in 2008? Your pictures of the memorial dedication look real familiar. We did one, or rather the SCV and DOC did one for us to dedicate Nathaniel Wright Wiseman's Confederate marker, in 2006. His marker is right under that big magnolia tree where your people were shown in your pictures.
also interesting you had some Wisemans in your Tenn. regiment I see from your website. That is a common name though. My folks were in Texas during the 1860's, then moved to Illinois. As far as I know, not from Tenn. Tom Wiseman
