Re: King's Creek near Tupelo MS, May 5, 1863

Alan,
The initial article is too long to quote. It appears in the November 1908
issue of the Confederate Veteran Magazine and is entitled "Flag of 13th
Alabama Regiment".
It reports on a conversation between Lucius D. Alden of the 33rd Missouri
Inf. and a John Hamel of Tennessee concerning the battle of Tupelo and the
capture of a Confederate flag there.
The following March (1909) the same Magazine publishes the following;
"The Veteran has a letter from Mr. J. W. Stallings, of Lafayette, Ala., in
regard to the "Flag of the 13th Regiment", mentioned in the November
issue. Mr. Stallings states that his Liuetenant was shot in both legs and that the flag of the 13th Alabama Regiment was lost. Mr. Stallings would be most grateful for information in regard to the lost flag."

Stallings seems to accept the Tupelo capture story. However I think that
George is correct in saying that this is probably a case of failing memory.
