I'm looking for similar information about my 3rd great grandfather, James Stephen McDonald (DOB 18 Dec 1831). He was with the 9th Alabama Infantry Regiment, Wilcox Brigade; Anderson's Division & A.P. Hill's Corp. However, he's listed as either sick or as a nurse in the hospital on the following muster dates:

Sept 1864 -- Hospital -- Roll shows he was present in Co. I, 9th Reg't. Ala

Oct. 1864 -- Hospital -- Roll shows he was present in Co. I, 9th Reg't. Ala

A cousin did that research years ago, and I don't know what hospital he was at. I'm also trying to figure out where he was from his enlistment date (or muster date; there is conflicting info as to which date this is) of 12 Oct. 1861 until he was attached as a nurse on 8 August 1862. He is listed as being absent from battle due to sickness from April 1862 to 30 June 1862. Do the hospitals have patient rolls?
