The Alabama in the Civil War Message Board

Re: Civil war hospitals in Mobile, Alabama

The question fails to list the name of the man you seek, however, there is but one man named Day that served as a nurse with the 36th Alabama Regiment. This man died from smallpox (variola) in Mobile. He served as a nurse at Camp Goode just outside of Mobile. Day died on 07 Jan 1863 at the place identified as the Pest(ilence) House....it is probable that he died in a ward of the former Marine Hospital, now called the William Crawford Gorgas Clinic. The other hospital used in Mobile during the war was the Mobile General Hospital also used to treat civilians. It is unlikely that soldiers with smallpox would have been admitted there.
