Alice, here's a noted observance that I have made about the 1870 Census. Seems like you can find just about everyone on the 1860 Census and a lot of these ex-confederate families start showing up on the 1880 Census once again. But the time between 1865 and the 1870 Census must have been very hostile toward ex-confederate soldiers and their families. There was a large amount of moving around during this time by these families. I believe a lot of the ex-confederate soldiers avoided the 1870 Census thru all this moving around, names being changed or the spelling changed on purpose or by error, but I think many of them just did not participate in the 1870 Census for fear of some type of discrimination or retaliation that might be dealt on the person or his family. This is just my thought on the 1870 Census.
