Re: Discussion of Confederate Records

Dear Mr. Howerton,

In response to your request for information on Anthon V. Bragg, he served in Company D under Captain D. Newton and enlisted in January 1864. This information came from the writings of my grandmother, Helen Bragg Gaughan. In support of her information, I refer once again to the LETTERS OF A CONFEDERATE SURGEON page 199 in a letter dated January 24, 1864 J. N. Bragg writes: "I cannot get any buttons here. Tell Ma to take those "Infantry buttons" of mine, for Anthon's coat. They are the first buttons I had..."

While it is probably unimportant, my great grandfather, Junius Newport Bragg was not born in NC as noted, but in Lowndes County, Alabama on May 4, 1838. They moved to Ouachita County, Arkansas in 1843.

Finally, I never dreamed that my original question would produce such a lengthy discussion. I, for one, have found it fascinating.

Sincerely,

Norman Savers
