Another point about muster rolls -- it is both fascinating and saddening to compare the muster rolls of regiments for the period ending June 30, 1863, and the period ending August 31, 1863. July 1863 was a bad, bad month for the South (Gettysburg, Helena, Vicksburg, Port Hudson) and the muster rolls reflect that fact. The number of killed, missing, wounded and captured during that month were staggering. It's poignant to see so many names marked "present for duty" in June that were crossed off the rolls in August.
