Re: James Pleasant King /35th Arkansas

Rob,

You are correct, the 35th Arkansas fought at Prairie Grove, Helena, and Jenkins' Ferry. Today there's not much to see at Helena or Jenkins Ferry with regard to interpretation of the battles. You would need to solicit the assistance of some of the local experts on those battles to help you interpret them in their present day context. A recent issue of North&South Magazine had a nice article on the Battle of Helena. I don't recall the specific issue, but the author was Gregory Urwin. The best book on the Battle of Jenkins' Ferry is "Steele's Retreat from Camden and the Battle of Jenkins' Ferry" by Ed Bearss. It was recently reprinted and should be available from most CW book vendors. Bearss based his account of the battle almost exclusively on reports published in the "Official Records of the War of the Rebellion." Another recent book that details the fight at Jenkins' Ferry is "The Camden Expedition" by David Forsyth.

Do you retain any of Col. King's effects (uniform, weapons, letters, etc.)? One of the flags of the 22nd/35th is in the possession of the Old Statehouse Museum in Little Rock.
