When I taught history at West Point, we would take the new cadets on a 'staff ride' of Gettysburg. I would always start the cadets at the Arkansas and/or Texas monuments and march the route of Hood's division, from the turnpike to the 20th Maine's position on Little Round Top.

The next morning (keep in mind these are 19 year olds, and I am an old soldier) I'd take them on a run up to Little Round Top to watch the sun rise (the NPS was always great since we were all in Army running clothes) and talk about sacrifice, duty and the Republic. What it took for those men (boys mainly) from both sides to attack that hill or to defend it and what it meant (and still means) to be an American.

Always moved them. It still does me :)
