That all ties in with the chameleon-like designations of Arkansas regiments in the Trans-Mississippi Army. The 35th Arkansas was originally known as the "First Regiment, Northwest Division, Trans-Mississippi Department." It was also known unofficially as "Rector's War Regiment, 1st Arkansas Volunteers." Finally, its official designation as the 35th Arkansas Regiment was made to stick, but later in the war it adopted the title of "22nd Arkansas Regiment" (apparently unofficially, since no order from the State Military Board or Confederate War Department has been found to authorize the redesignation).

This has caused no end of confusion with the original 22nd Arkansas Infantry. In fact, the colors of the 35th (22nd) Arkansas in the Old State House Museum are mis-identified as those of the original 22nd (later 20th) Arkansas Infantry. I have tried without success to get them to correct this, and have pointed out the battle honors on the flag are those of the 35th (22nd) Arkansas, not the 20th (22nd) Arkansas. But no one seems interested in doing anything about it.
