Linda, I recall reading a book many years ago titled "The Lost Generation," or something like that. It discussed the impact on postwar Britain and France of the astronomical loss of young men in the First World War. I remember thinking at the time that a similar impact would have been felt in the United States following the Civil War, but I've seen anything written about it.

It would make an interesting research subject for someone to take up.
