Thanks Bob. I'm glad Witt had a good life after the war. He sounds like quite a fellow. I wondered why he was free after Port Hudson.

G-Grandpa George also did well. He farmed near Quitman and died at 83. He was just 21 when the war ended.

George told his children and grandchildren stories about his infantry years and his adventures walking home from Port Hudson, but he never told them about his time with the cavalry. My mother believed her grandpa spent that year living the life of an outlaw and had made enemies that were postwar neighbors.

Did the 10th fight with local civilians that favored the Union?
