The Arkansas in the Civil War Message Board

Re: looking for information about my grandfather

Debbye, the 20th Arkansas didn't serve in the Indian Territory. JR included a summary of the 20th Arkansas in his post, above.

A note of caution, there is nothing to indicate that Corpl. H. Beam is Hiram Kyles Beam. In fact, his name might actually be H. Bean. David Beam is actually an alternative spelling of David Bean, which is how the man is carried on the rolls of the 20th Arkansas. Another alternative spelling given in his record is David Been.

Co. E, 20th Arkansas Infantry, was recruited in Hempstead County, where the Beene family resided and contributed many sons to the Confederate army. I feel it's more likely that H. Beam and David Bean are members of the Beene family. It is unlikely that two men from Scott County would travel down to Hempstead County to enlist, when there were many companies recruiting in their own neighborhood back home. Not impossible, mind you, but unlikely. So far, most of the men of Co. E, 20th Arkansas, who I've managed to positively identify have been Hempstead County men.

Both of these men enlisted at Washington, Arkansas, on March 1, 1862, for twelve months. H. Beam was appointed corporal on June 15, 1862. Both men were captured at Big Black River Bridge, Mississippi, on May 17, 1863, and were ultimately sent to Fort Delaware. Pvt. David Bean died in prison on December 21, 1863. Corpl. H. Beam was exchanged at City Point, Virginia, on December 25, 1863.
