A friend of mine did his masters thesis on bushwhackers, civilians and the Union military response in Jasper County, Missouri. He went in the basement of the courthouse there and found box after box of records. The victims often times recognized the guerrillas, regardless of flavor...bushwhacker, jayhawker, whatever, and after the war took these guys to court. The stories in the testimonies are mind blowing. One that comes to mind is of a group of bushwhackers that were burning the house of a Union sympathizing family. The families 12-year-old daughter ran into the burning house to save a family portrait or some other object and when she came back out, a bushwhacker was standing near the door with a match and set the girl on fire. The family watched their house burn and their daughter burn alive.
